New Directors of our member institutions appointed in 2011

The year of 2011 has brougt considerable change in the membership of ORL-BAL.
Professor Daniel Bodmer has been appointed Director of the University ORL-HNS Department at the Medical Faculty of the University of Basel. Professor Bodmer has wide clinical experience and is especially active in reseach on the inner ear, his main surgical field also being otosurgery.

Professor Daniel Bodmer was born in 1968 and studied Medicine and Molecular Biology in Zürich. During his studies, he passed US medical licensing exams and engaged in research in Molecular Biology at the Swiss Federal Technical University (ETH), concluding with a doctorate on the ologosaccharyltransferase complex (MD PhD). Starting in 2001, he obtained a fellowship in Hearing Research at the University of San Diego and after two years became Head of the Lab Team for Inner Ear Research at the University Hospital in Zürich. In 2005, he became Lecturer in ORL.

His clinical training was also done in Zürich, starting 1999 with Professor Stephan Schmid at the University ORL Department and included one year in Neurosurgery (Prof. Y. Yonekawa). Having become a senior specialist in 2006, he obtained a Fellowship in Otology and Skull Base Surgery, Inner ear and Cochlear implant Programs with Professors J. Nedzelski and J. Chen in Toronto. Consequently he received a Assistant Professorship at the University ORL Department in Basel in 2007 and was appointed Professor and Chairman at the same Department in 2011.

Professor Frank Metternich, formerly vice-director of the ORL Department at the Klinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf, a prominent tumor surgeon, has been appointed Director of the ORL Department at the Cantonal Hospital in Aarau.

Professor Frank Metternich was born in 1964 and studied medicine in Cologne (Germany). During his studies he engaged in research of surgical anatomy, concluding with a doctorate in 1991 on the anatomic structure of the preperitoneal tissue of the inguinal canal and its significance for the surgery of inguinal hernias. In 2003 he became lecturer in ORL at University Hospital Hamburg – Eppendorf for postdoctoral thesis of the significance of Erythropoetin as part of an adjuvant radiotherapy of tumors. His clinical training was primary done in Cologne, starting in 1991 with General Surgery and Vascular Surgery, followed by Radiology and continued since 1992 with Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery. Having become a senior specialist in 1997 with special interest in surgical oncology and plastic reconstructive surgery he received an assisted Professorship in 2003 at the ORL Department of University Hospital Hamburg – Eppendorf and was appointed Professor and executive vice chairman in 2007. In 2011 he became Chairmann of the ORL Department of the Kanton Hospital Aarau.

Professor Daniel Bodmer ist Jahrgang 1968 und hat in Zürich Medizin studiert. In dieser Zeit absolvierte er die beiden US Licensing-Prüfungen. Ab 1994 war er im Dr. med. Dr. sc. nat. –Programm, in den Fächern Molekularbiologie, Zoologie und Physikalische Chemie an der ETH in Zürich und schloss ab mit der Doktorarbeit „The Oligasaccharyltrasferase Complex“. 2001 bis 2002 absolvierte er ein Fellowship in Hörforschung an der University of California in San Diego und übernahm 2002 für 5 Jahre eine Gruppenleitung am Innenohrforschungslaboratoriums des Universitätsspitals Zürich. 2005 wurde er Privatdozent. Die klinische Ausbildung absolvierte er zwischen 1999 und 2006 an der ORL Universitätsklinik Zürich (Prof. S. Schmid) mit einem einjährigen Abstecher in die Neurochirurgie (Prof.Y.Yonekawa) bis zur Ernennung zum Oberarzt 2006. Das nachfolgende Jahr verbrach er bei den Professoren J.Nedzelski und J.Chen als Fellow in Otologie, Neurotologie und Schädelbasischirugie sowie Innenohr- und Cochlea Implant Programm in Toronto. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Zürich wurde er 2007 zum Assistenzprofessor mit Tenure-Track in Basel gewählt und im Februar 2011 zum Chefarzt und Ordinarius für Otorhinolaryngologie an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Universität Basel.

Godina 2011 donela je dosta promena u članstvu ORL-BAL.

Profesor Daniel Bodmer je imenovan za direktora Univerzitetske ORL klinike Univerzitetske bolnice u Baselu. U tom svojstvu je i šef Katedre ORL na Medicinskom fakultetu. Ima široko iskustvo na kliničkom polju a posebno je aktivan na istraživanjima o funkciji unutrašnjeg uva. Na hirurškom polju se posebno bavi ušnom hirurgijom.

Profesor Frank Metternich, bivši zamenik direktora ORL klinike na univerzitetskom Klinikume Hamburg – Eppendorf, koji se posebno bavi tumorskom hirurgijom u našoj specijalnosti, imenovan je za načelnika Klinike za ORL i hirugiju glave i vrata pri Kantonalnoj bolnici u Aarau.
