He is otosurgeon at the Royal National Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital and the University of London and is Head of the CI Programme there. We thank him sincerely for dedicating his free time, energy and knowledge, without any remuneration, for the benefit of the young generation of otosurgeons in Serbia. We have founded a blog dedicated almost exclusively to the transfer of newest literature data for otorhinolaryngologists. Articles from peer-reviewed publications are abstracted in Croatian-Serbian or Serbian-Croatian idiom, salient points are underscored for discussion. We hope to thus institute a forum for clinical and scientific knowledge exchange. Since 1994, Prof. Wolfensberger has headed the Head and Neck Surgery segment of the Basel ORL Department, so he is widely known and respected in the hospital and in the region. He is founder and Head of the Head and Neck Tumor Center in Basel, where interprofessional treatment of tumor patients together with maxillofacial and dental surgery, oncology and oncologic radiology is performed. Besides hospital activities, he has been President of the Swiss ORL-HNS Society and is now heading the CME Comission of the same Society. He was the moving spirit of the Head and Neck Surgery Working Group of Switzerland, which organises regular courses for trainees and practicing specialists. An accomplished musician, he is an active and widely known violinist. At the first session after Prof. Rudolf Probst has been appointed in Zürich, Markus Wolfensberger has been voted new President of ORL-BAL. Professor Josef Sopko, practicing phoniatrist in Basel and consulting phoniatrist of the Aarau hospital, who entertains close ties to his country of origin, has arranged that 6 used, but still very serviceable ORL examination units by Atmos are donated to the colleagues in Košice. Professor Juraj Koval, Director of the ORL Department in Košice has arranged the transport from Switzerland, our organisation and Prof Sopko divide the remaining costs. Not only the Košice department, but also smaller ORL units will profit from this donation. We thank the Aarau Cantonal Hospital AG authorities, especially Mr. Georg Thoma and Mr. Ulrich Römmelt, for their generous support.

Professor Rudolf Probst, Chairman and Director of the ORL Department of the University of Basel has been appointed to the University ORL Chair and as Director of the University ORL Department in Zürich, starting with 1. August 2006. He is also the Founding President of ORL-BAL. Born in 1950, Rudolf Probst was appointed in Basel in 1991. Continuing the long tradition of the Basel Department, which was directed by famous otologists in the past (F. Siebenmann, E. Oppikofer, E. Lüscher and C.R. Pfaltz), he greatly favoured research in the fields of audiology and neurotology, tutoring several important projects fostered by the Swiss National Fund. Cochlear implant and vestibular schwannoma surgery were introduced and developed, a number of specialists were trained in this field and also sent abroad on fellowships. Modern Paedaudiology and Phoniatry were introduced, cooperation with all the hospitals of the BAL Association was instituted and intense CME programmes realised. As long-time President of the Audiology Commission of the Swiss ORL- HNS Society, he has instituted standards in hearing aid fitting and for audiometry equipment in the country. Besides having an enviable publications list, he is active member of several societies, including the Collegium ORLAS. Outstanding traits of Rudolf Probst‘s personality are his scientific, logical and straightforward way of thinking as well as his outgoing and affable character. Members of the ORL-BAL, most of them being also his personal friends of long standing, very much regret his departure, but trust that his continuing membership in the Society of Friends of ORL (Förderverein für ORL) within ORL-BAL also stands for a new and fruitful cooperation between the Zürich Department and the four member institutions of

...microscopes and light sources took up much of the space and there was little room for OR linen, a cherished addition to each transport. This time the Novi Sad ORL Department was on the recieving end, but generously gave some of the material to other Departments in need. We sincerely thank the Swiss communications company Swisscom ( Messrs Reto Jent and Pietro Belsito in particular) for putting the van to our disposition without charge for the second time in two years (without this great gesture, the expenses would be too extensive for our limited budget). And by the way: everything was unloaded and reloaded within four hours at the border customs to Serbia for control, a great job for the muscles! see image in new window...

Born in 1984, she has studied design in Basel, Switzerland, specialising in visual communication and product design. At this point in time, she is active also in interior architecture and industrial design. We are very happy with her various solutions for our emblems and sincerely thank this creative young woman for her voluntary cooperation. Music, reading and museums are her hobbies, as well as snowboarding. Friends, former and present team members and guests gathered for a symposium, organised by Phoniatrist Josef Sopko and Voice Therapist Mrs. Esther Walde, to the sixtyeth birthday of Mihael Podvinec, Chief of the local ORL Department. The programme was very varied and presented in-depth studies: the CEO of the hospital, orthopaedic surgeon G. Ruflin, developed a vision of the hospital’s future, describing a series of imminent changes of a fast-track development in the Swiss health service. The Aarau hospital has allready implemented a number of these changes in a pioneering effort. Philippe Monnier, of the Lausanne Department, reviewed 30 years of experience in the treatment of tracheal stenosis, demonstrating beautifully how acribic and persistent effort may lead to significant progress. He did not miss to mention which problems and perspectives remain for the following generations to solve, inciting the young to be persistent and creative.The President of ORL-BAL, Rudolf Probst, analysed the personality of the host, crediting him with a missionary engagement in matters of training, reputed to be somewhat authoritarian, but allways well-meant. The picture of a wise old crocodile rounded up his lecture, and was acclaimed by the trainees present – and also by the host, who promised to maintain this style. In a very moving gesture, the Basel team members presented Podvinec with a check for 5.000 Swiss francs as a contribution to the activities of the Society of Friends of ORL. Ranko Dergenc, President of the Serbian ORL Society, after introducing with a history of our specialty in Serbia, spoke on recent developments in his country, mentioned the different supporting projects by our organisation with gratitude and stressed the necessity of a countinuing support ot the SOF. André Arnoux, Associate at the Aarau Department, reviewed a 10-year experience in partial surgery of the larynx for malignancies, which he introduced and developed here. He proved that great efforts are allways rewarded, as the results showed a sizeable progress in comparison to formerly practiced classical methods, both in the oncological sense and the quality of life of the patients. Finally, Josef Sopko spoke on the fascinations of different voice registers to the human sense of hearing. A formidable speaker, he truly fascinated the auditorium, showing the first animated computerized analysis of voice formation of the larynx and by illustrating his point with musical examples of famous singers. A cello soloist concerto ended the symposium. PD Dr. David Holzmann, of the University ORL Department in Zürich, was invited by the Departments of ORL and Neurosurgery in Aarau to operate on a rare case of congenital malformation of the sphenoid - a bilateral open Sternberg canal with myelomeningoceles bilaterally, combined with a unilateral CSF leak. Dr. Holzmann has allready operated endoscopically several such cases in Zürich. The surgery was successful and our picture shows Dr Holzmann (right) and the neurosurgeon Prof. Landolt (seen from behind) during the operation. Interdisciplinary cooperation is a great priority of our Departments, and we envisage the introduction of endoscopic hypopituitary surgery in the near future to replace the classical trans-septal technique. see image in new window...

Our Training Center is starting in February 06 ! The host team, the Chief of the ORL Department of the Military Medical Academy in Belgrade Col. Dušan Bijelić, MD (right) and Project Manager Maj. Milanko Milojević MD, are seen here during the ORL meeting in November. The first course will concern Temporal Bone Anatomy and Surgery, and our Course Director will be Professor Gerard O’Donoghue, FRCS, from Nottingham, Great Britain. Professor Klaus Albegger of Salzburg, Austria, has recently sent a presidential letter of invitation to the Serbian ENT Society to participate in the preparations for the next European Congress of ORL-HNS, integrating EUFOS with EAORL-HNS. The recipient, Professor Ranko Dergenc, is asked to submit a list of potential speakers and moderators belonging to the generation of promising scientists and clinicians of the younger generation, interested in specific topics and willing to participate in establishing the scientific programme for the meeting. For some time now, our Swiss Society of Friends of ORL has been contacting various organisms in order to promulgate the integration of S&M into the European specialist network. Our sincere thanks go to Professor Reidar Grenman, President of the Union Européene der Médecins Spécialistes (UEMS ORL) and Professors Albegger and Stammberger, President and Co-President of the European Congress in 2007, for their collegial cooperation in the realisation of these projects.

On the occasion of the 60th birthday of the President, members of ORL-BAL and friends of our Society (special thanks to Prof. Sopko and voice therapist Mrs. E. Walde) have organised a half-day symposium with different subjects: Prof Probst will speak about acronyms like ORL-BAL, USB, MP and others. Prof. Dergenc, as guest from Serbia and Montenegro, will speak about difficulties of practicing our specialty in his country. Prof. Monnier from Lausanne will speak about tracheal stenosis, a subject which had made his work internationally famous, Dr. Arnoux will present results of partial laryngectomies, which he has introduced in Aarau, and Prof. Sopko will talk about fascinating aspects of phoniatry. The invitation to this symposium goes to all those interested in our work and the subjects we treat. For the third time in a yearly sequence, Professor Heinz Stammberger invited thirty ENT specialists from S&M to Graz for a two-day demonstrational course in endoscopic sinus surgery. This time, he adressed mainly those with advanced operative experience: pituitary surgery, CSF fistula repair, endoscopic tumor surgery and new aspects in chronic polyposis were adressed. The audience had ample possibility to follow live surgery and to discuss a number of other topics like DCR, postoperative care and conservative treatment with the host. We would like to thank Professor Stammberger sincerely for his sustained, admirably intense effort in helping propagate modern knowledge on this subject to colleagues who work in less favorable conditions, and we look forward to repeating this course in the future. Our Society has organised and supported this event. Our gratitude also goes to Karl Storz Company for its sustained sponsoring of the course, which has become a tradition, cherished by the colleagues abroad. Professor Stammberger has, for the third time, invited 30 surgeons form Serbia and Montenegro for a theoretical course in FESS. This time, he adressed the more experienced surgeons which have started FESS after his first visit to Belgrade in 2002. Endoscopic closure of CSF fistulas and pituitary surgery were demonstrated, the technique and pitfalls of these operations, as well as those in endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy, were largely discussed, as well as a number of general aspects of FESS. Our Society and the Storz Company have supported the event. Professor Stammberger donated his time and energy in his usual inspiring style, with a true firework of didactic brilliance. We thank him for his sustaining help to our partners in S.&M. and are looking forward to a next course in 2006. see image in new window...

Dr Arnoux, member of the ORL-BAL Board, visited the University ENT Department in Novi Sad in December 2004 and presented lectures on one of his areas of expertise, the surgery of the larynx. This course was organized due to wholehearted support and efforts of
Prim.Dr. Aleksandar Bajec, head of "Dr D.Misovic-Dedinje", and under
the auspices of the European Rhinologic Society, managed by Doctor
Snezana Stanimirovic, senior specialist at "Dragisa Misovic-Dedinje"
hospital in Belgrade. Renown rhinosurgeon Prof Pirsig, laureate of the
Life Achievement Award of the International Rhinologic Society, held a
four day live rhinosurgery course for otolaryngologists and plastic surgeons of Serbia, Montenegro, Republic of Srpska and Macedonia. Four
closed and four open rhinoplasties were transmitted into the
auditorium,and a lively discussion on all aspects of rhinosurgery and
general patient care ensued between the surgeon and the seventy
attendees throughout the course duration.The organisers extend special thanks to Professor Pirsig, who had already visited Belgrade before and given a course for otolaryngologists together with Professor Huizing from the Netherlands. This first course in live surgery for specialists from several
countries was a great contribution to raising the level of postgraduate
operative education. Therefore, the organizers are very grateful to this demonstration of sustained and friendly support by Professor Pirsig and hope for continued future cooperation. The University of Basel and the Medical Faculty has appointed Doctor Welge-Lüssen Lecturer (Privatdozentin) in otorhinolaryngology. Born in Kiel, after studies of medicine in Germany and specializing in Basel, she has become Senior Otorhinolaryngologist in Basel and Aarau for a number of years and followed significant research programmes in olfactology. She has also instituted intense cooperation with a number of foreign departments interested in the same topic, Erlangen being one of the most significant scientific partners of Basel in the subject of objective olfactometry (OEP). Traditionally, the candidates hold a ceremonial initiation lecture for the general public at the Aula of the Museum of Natural History on the Augustinergasse, a place of dignified decorum, where portraits of researchers since the 15th century sternly observe all doings. On the 19th of May, the public was treated to a comprehensive history of research on olfaction and on modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in olfactology, and the lecture was indeed a great success.ORL-BAL congratulates warmly and welcomes another new Faculty member joining the Board. The Society sincerely thanks these two assiduous collaborators in knowledge transfer to our partner countries, where specific ORL anaesthesia is often practiced under somewhat difficult conditions.
